When I turned on my computer this morning I was shocked to see that Charlie Rose was yet another powerful male celebrity, industry leader or politician that is alleged to have sexually harassed and assaulted women. Multiple women accused Charlie of sexual harassment and groping from the late 1990s to 2011. Shameful!
Over the past few months an avalanche of celebrities and politicians are accused by women of sexual misconduct.
Here’s a short list:
Harvey Weinstein, Louis C.K., Kevin Spacey, James Toback, Ben Affleck, Chris Savino, Roy Price, Oliver Stone, Sylvester Stallone, Russell Simmons, John Besh (celebrity chef), Mark Halperin, Michael Oreskes, Lockhart Steele, George H.W. Bush, Roy Moore, Al Franken.
It appears the more male-dominated an institution, the stronger its protection of predatory behavior will be. Women in the military, government, Silicon Valley (tech world), Hollywood and TV, athletics, Wall Street, fire stations and police departments will attest to this.
Sadly, a common theme in sexual harassment stories across industries is that women are being forced out of their jobs and denied opportunities for advancement, which is part of the economic oppression of women.
We have to train parents and teachers how to raise boys and girls with mutual and equal respect. And we have to start this at home and continue it at school.
